EXAMINATIONS
We carry out comprehensive examinations appointments on all of our patients. This include an oral cancer and gum disease screening, a check of tooth wear and of course a thorough search for any cavities or any other problems with your teeth.Â
We also carry out all routine x-rays, where they are justified to maintain our patient's oral health.Â
For children, we support the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry’s campaign Dental Check by One.  This advises all parents and guardians to ensure that young children in their care are taken to see a dentist as soon as their first teeth come through, and before their first birthday.
We routinely provide preventative treatment for all of our patients under 18 years old, by placing fluoride varnish and fissure sealants.
FILLINGS
To preserve the life of a tooth, a filling is sometimes needed to prevent the spread of decay through the tooth, leading to its eventual loss.
While prevention is better than the cure, if a tooth needs filling, then this is the best course of action, as left unchecked the tooth will eventually fail.
We only use high quality dental materials for all of our types of fillings, be it a traditional amalgam filling, or a white composite filling.
Fillings are typically carried out under local anaesthesia so the patient is as comfortable as possible.

At Hathersage Dental Surgery we are well equipped to place high quality white composite fillings, which are strong and lost lasting, and in most cases we can make it appear as though the tooth is unfilled.
ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
Root canal treatment is a procedure design in extend the life of a tooth once the nerve of the tooth has died, and is a source of infection.
We isolate the tooth and use a modern rotary system to thoroughly irrigate and clean the canals of the teeth prior to sealing them, completing the treatment
Root canals can sometimes be more complex, typically for back teeth, and these may require a referral to specialist.
For back teeth, we recommend a crown once the procedure is completed, to protect the teeth from cracking and breaking.
EXTRACTIONS
When a tooth has reached the end of it's shelf life, and cannot be saved, we usually recommend an extraction to prevent infection and pain.Â
The team at Hathersage are all very experienced in the removal of teeth and we can treat the vast majority of patients in house.Â
Extractions are always carried out under local anaesthetic and we aim to make the procedure as pleasant as possible.
GUM DISEASE
The gums are the foundations for the teeth, and without healthy gums perfectly sound teeth can be lost. Some people are more prone to problems with gums and we can carry out treatment to help prevent tooth loss through gum disease.
This will be assessed at the check up, and discussed at the appointment. We usually recommend to see our therapist for gum treatment.
CROWNS
Crowns can be excellent treatment choices in the correct situations. For cracked or heavily filled teeth (including root canal treatment), they can consolidate the tooth and prevent further fractures, that can make the tooth unrepairable.Â
Crowns come in various forms, from simple metal crowns, to precious gold, or even very aesthetic all ceramic crowns.
BRIDGES
When a tooth has been lost it will leave a gap. If this is in a visible position, you may be interested in a replacement. A bridge uses the adjacent teeth to support a false tooth that is glued in.Â
The advantage over other replacements, such as a denture, is that it is fixed in position without any framework in the mouth that can be uncomfortable, and is often a better aesthetic result.
DENTURES
Dentures are a way to replace lost teeth, with a prosthetic that can be removed.
We can fit these to fill a gap immediately following an extraction, and while the gum settles you can think over the long term options.
Dentures come in various forms, starting with a simply acrylic denture, however we can also make cobalt chrome metal dentures, and flexible dentures.
Cobalt chrome metal denture make excellent protheses, however require a stable mouth as they are difficult to modify once made.
Flexible dentures work as excellent single tooth replacements in the correct situations.
HYGIENE
Over time food and drink, often tea and coffee, will cause staining of the teeth. This is not necessarily harmful to oral health, but regular cleaning will help a nice smile.
We can offer hygiene appointments with our therapist.
TOOTH WHITENING
Tooth whitening can be an excellent, non-invasive way to improve your smile. We offer an at home kit, with either day (6% HP)Â or night (16% CP)Â time bleach.
We will need to take some simple impressions, and the bleaching trays will be made at our lab in Sheffield.Â
The benefit of whitening, is that unlike crowns or veneers, which require the tooth to be drilled, there is no damage to the tooth, and the effects are reversible.Â
Tooth whitening is similar to a sun tan, and will require topping up, though this can be over several months.
COMPOSITE BONDING AND BUILD-UPS
We can provide a cosmetic service at the practice to improve your smile.Â
Sometimes just even adding a small amount of the composite white filling can make a huge difference to your smile, by closing gaps or improving the appearance of small teeth.Â
Each patient would be individually assessed at the check up stage for suitability.
GRINDING AND CLENCHING AT NIGHT
Parafunctional, or any form of grinding or clenching while asleep is very common. Studies have shown that more than 80% of the population will go through this at some stage in their lives, and for some people it can be ever present. In the vast majority of cases, stress and anxiety are responsible.
While we are asleep, we can put fourteen times the amount of force through our teeth compared to when we are awake, so we can do some real damage over time.Â
Very heavy grinders often get muscle pain around the face, neck and head, but this is not always the case.
If you are finding your teeth appear worn and frequently chip, it may be worth considering a night time splint.Â
At Hathersage Dental Surgery, we work with S4S lab in Sheffield to provide patients with a Sleep Clench Inhibitor (SCi). This doesn't stop grinding, however it does reduce muscle activity, and helps to protect the teeth and muscles.
